The Election Commission (EC) is going to add seven new guidelines for election campaigning in all social media including Facebook ahead of the Thirteenth National Parliament Election. These guidelines will be contained in the code of conduct for political parties and candidates.

An official of the Election Commission said, “We call the current era the era of social media.” In such an era, it is natural that candidates and political parties will conduct election campaigns on all social media including Facebook and YouTube. Therefore, the commission is also finalizing the code of conduct for political parties and candidates by imposing some restrictions on campaigning on social media. I feel that campaigning on social media for these rules will not spread hatred.

The seven provisions being added to the Political Parties and Candidates Code of Conduct 2025 on social media campaigning are:

1. The candidate, his agent or the concerned party shall submit the necessary information to the Returning Officer including the name, account ID, e-mail address of all the social media used before the commencement of the campaign.

2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) shall not be used for nefarious purposes in election campaign or any election related work.

3. Creating and disseminating hate speech, false or misleading information, defamation or fake election content is strictly prohibited.

4. No hateful or inflammatory language, or personal attacks directed at rival candidates, women, minorities or any community.

5. Religious or ethnic sentiments cannot be abused for electoral purposes.

6. Before sharing or publishing any election-related information or content on social media, its authenticity should be verified.

7. No political party, candidate or their supporters shall create, publish, disseminate or share any false, misleading, biased, hateful, obscene or defamatory content on social media or any other medium in general, editing or using artificial intelligence (AI) with the intention of misleading voters, defaming or defaming anyone.

It should be noted that Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has already said that the 13th National Assembly elections will be held in the first half of next February before fasting. The schedule will be announced in the first half of December.
