In October 2010, franchise creator Steven Lisberger began working on a sequel to Tron: Legacy. In March 2017, it was reported that the franchise would be moving towards a soft reboot rather than a legacy sequel. Jared Leto will be attached to produce and portray a new character named Ares, who was retained from previous iterations of the Ascension script.
When he lived around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was a passion for aliens for the first time. This led him to wonder if intelligent life had come from inside a machine that was not controlled by humans, rather than from space. Even after the Ascension script was abandoned, the creators made a conscious decision to build parts of Ares' story from that version. Especially since its core concept was relevant because of their sentiments. The concept of Ares has become more relevant every year since the release of Legacy.
Garth Davies was appointed as director in August 2020 while Wiguto was working on the script, but he stepped down in January 2023. Ronning replaced him a month later. Production was scheduled to begin in August 2023 but was delayed by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. The film finally began filming in Vancouver in January 2024 and finished in May.Disney plans to reboot the 45-year-old sci-fi series, which will explore modern-day questions of artificial intelligence, human morality and the control of technology. The story centers around a highly advanced 'program' named Ares, who is sent from a virtual world called 'Grid' to the real world. His mission is to establish the first direct contact with mankind, but this contact is not very peaceful. Scientists create an AI entity, which has advanced abilities beyond human intelligence. This entity is Ares, whose job is to bridge the gap between the human and program worlds. But when Ares arrives in the real world, he finds that humans fear him and want to destroy him. As a result, he is in a dilemma, will he fight for humanity, or protect the freedom of his species? This conflict is the main philosophy of the film, humanity versus artificial life.
