More than 2 million taxpayers have filed income tax returns online so far in the current tax year 2025-26.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) informed this information in a press release on Saturday (November 29).

It is said in the notification that on August 4, the financial advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed www.etaxnbr.gov.bd Tax payers have been responding very positively since the launch of the e-return filing process through the website. As a result, the number of e-return filers has crossed 2 million within three months.

According to the NBR, through a special order, all persons other than senior taxpayers aged 65 years and above, physically disabled or special needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in the country have been made mandatory to file returns online this year. However, exempted taxpayers can also file e-return if they wish.

Tax payers can apply to the concerned Commissioner of Excise by 15 December if there is a problem related to registration in the e-return system. If approved they will get opportunity to submit paper return.

The notification also informed that now the authorized representatives of the taxpayer can also file the e-return. Tax payers can pay income tax through mobile financial services, debit/credit card or internet banking by entering income, expenditure, assets and filing information in the system without uploading any documents. After filing the return, they can print the acknowledgment slip and tax certificate online themselves, which has made e-return popular at home and abroad, NBR said.

Taxpayers, lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants and chartered secretaries have also been trained this year to facilitate e-returns.

NBR said the call center at 09643-71-71-71 is providing round-the-clock support for any assistance related to e-returns. Besides, if the problem is reported in the e-tax service portal, immediate solution is given. E-Return Help Desks are also operating in tax zones across the country.

Through a circular, NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to file e-returns by December 31.
